Dear Friend of Hawaii Children’s Cancer Foundation: Last year, your support made it possible for Hawaii Children’s Cancer Foundation (HCCF) to grant almost $250,000 in assistance to families in Hawaii that are caring for a child diagnosed with cancer. As the honorary chair for their upcoming, signature fundraising event, Moon Over Merchant Street, I am asking for your continued support now. As a mother of a son who is a cancer survivor, I can fully empathize with other families and know what a vital role HCCF plays in the community. I also know how fiscally responsible HCCF is and how extremely careful the organization is about controlling operating expenses; in fact, 95¢ of every collar received goes to programs that directly help the children and their families. During these challenging economic times, HCCF needs your help more than ever as children continue to be diagnosed with cancer and families continue to turn to HCCF for financial assistance to help them through what is undoubtedly the most difficult time of their lives. Annual out-of-pocket costs for having a child with cancer are overwhelming — about 53% of the average gross family income. Often, one parent will need to stop working to care full time for their child. Your donation makes it possible for HCCF to help with expenses not covered by health insurance, including medical bills, rent, mortgage and utilities payments, as well as transportation and lodging costs for Neighbor Island families. HCCF is also able to offer assistance with education, advocacy, and programs that help children succeed in school during and after treatment, as well as programs that assist survivors who are attending college. Moon Over Merchant Street will be held on Saturday, May 16, 2009 at Murphy’s Bar & Grill. The funds raised will support the Family Financial Assistance Program and I hope that you will join me in making this a very successful event. Reserve your table now.
